Oxidation starts immediately, however it will take a few months to show effect (this will vary by equipment. You can trim about 3-4 inches off each end and be safe. Use a good crimp vs. solder when making up the banana jacks.

Can I ask what 6.1 system you’re using?

If was less than $1,000 your wasting your money on Monster. Monster is how BestBuy and CircuitCity make money.

I am currently using these plugs and they are pretty good for the price. You can get similar ones at Radio Shack too:

I noticed a small amount of oxidation after about a year right at the end of the wire. I just cut it back an inch or so and it was like new again.
